The Ibiraquera Beach Bar is 10km north of the city of Imbituba SC, about 90 km south of Florianópolis Island.

WCT World Championship Tour Brazilian leg of the World Surfing Championship

It is in Imbituba that takes place every year the Brazilian leg of the World Surfing Championship – WCT (World Championship Tour). IWC Ibiraquera Wave Contest – Brazilian stage of Windsurfing, Kitesurfing and global Stand Up Paddle

The Ibiraquera Wave Contest, unique sailing event in Brazil held for 16 consecutive years, established itself as the most anticipated Brazilian championship of Windsurf and Kitesurf calendar in the waves and has shown athletes like Kauli Seadi and Wilhelm Schurmann, both Santa Catarina. The IWC is headquartered in Praia da Barra de Ibiraquera in Imbituba / SC, considered the best place in the country and one of the world’s best, to practice Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in the waves. The 2007 edition of the World PWA was held in Barra de Ibiraquera, where is located the School of Wind and Kitesurfing Kauli Seadi.

In September 1998, following a grassroots campaign led by Franca Whale Project and local entrepreneurs, the City of Imbituba decreed Tipping Whale Shed of the site history, and later Municipal Act, which transferred the site to the project with a view to its restoration . With the help of the community and the old hunters who participated in the activities of capture and processing of whales, the Shed was rebuilt and today hosts the Whaling Museum, first in South America to gather information about the plight of the whales, their killing and fighting for its preservation.

Thanks to the efforts of the Right Whale Project, one of the most important Brazilian marine conservation project, the municipality of Imbituba is recognized as the Brazilian capital of whales. Right whales have here their most important breeding ground in Brazilian waters, which was found in nearly 25 years of continuous research of the Project, which promoted the start of watching tourism whales as an economic alternative for the region in winter. Also thanks to the Project, Imbituba hosts the Environmental Protection Area of ​​the Whale, a federal conservation area of ​​about 156,000 hectares to protect the species and coastal environments, created in 2000 from the proposed project.

They are maintained by the Project Whale two public viewing structures to receive tourists coming to the region in winter to see the whales: the Museum of Imbituba whale, located on the beach of Porto and only of its kind in South America, based on a reconstruction history of the last whaling station in southern Brazil; and the National Center for Conservation Whale, located on the beach in Itapirubá, 11 km from the city center. Imbituba has ideal conditions for the observation of whales from land, since between July and November you can see them up to 30 meters from the beaches and rocky shores. The many coastal trails lend themselves to the development of ecotourism. it is necessary, however, that urgent action is taken to curb the criminal pillaging of the natural heritage of the municipality, which occurs mainly by the irregular and uncontrolled urbanization.
